Monthly Writing Prompt
For this month's writing prompt write a scene using the following sentence to start;

The streets were deserted. Where was everyone? Where had they all gone?

Writing Tip
Our monthly writing tips are written by our very own TerishD. You can read more in Terish's Blog located in "The Abstractions" area of the forum.

Look Back

When not able to write ahead, it helps to look back. In my case I had written a paragraph ahead of the story. What I needed to do was add a section of exposition (talking) presenting some facts. In going back, I realized that I could insert a section where a 'tour' of the surroundings could be done. This allowed for character interaction, story development, and other things that enabled me to present the facts in an entertaining manner.

One should not face a writer's block with the mentality of bursting through it. I have found in my own experience that a writer's block is usually due to my mind indicating that it has a problem in 'channeling' the story. One reason might be a re-imagining of certain story points. Another reason however is that there is a problem in where you are at in the story, so you need to look back and find out the problem with the 'journey' that prevents the tale from advancing.

PostSubject: Nothing, just a friendly update   July 29th 2009, 11:22 pm

Well, let me see -

1) Love Life - Nothing. The girl that I was speaking to evaporated. It was nice having somebody to talk to for a time, but the internet is often like using Ouija.

2) Job - Nothing. Playing school politics and looking. The schools here are dumbing down, so only keeping 'nice' teachers that put on shows then get worried at test times - because they know that they haven't taught anything.

3) Myself - Oh, I am okay. Actually got a partial ear of corn this year, so can claim that I grew something. My work on the family property is moving forward. Would have done some more yesterday, but a rain system has stopped here. Would like to go Saturday, but it looks to be still raining then as well.

I spent Monday resolving a problem towards writing my online game. Immediately found another problem. Yesterday I resolved a job scam being attempted (when the job claims 70,000+ a year, and hires you on the spot - yep, there is a problem). I worked today to develop a weather generator, and it looks good. Will probably go back to 3D programming tomorrow. Basically keeping myself busy.

I hope things are going well with others.

1) Take it from someone who has made and worked with Ouija boards, the internet is much worse.

2) My mom use to be a teacher's assistant working grade school age special needs kids and you are certainly right, there is a lot of politics.

3) Congrats on your corn. I grew up on a working farm and can't grow a decent garden here in the city to save my life.

I think it is the city that does it, as urban life has that tendency to choke the life out of anything it comes in contact to.

Bugger about the teaching jobs. My mother, father, uncle and best friend from high school were or are still all teachers. So yah, those jobs can be a bit (whole lot) of much.

Glad to hear about the corn! Sweet!

You will have to send us a picture of the weather machine!

It is a program for my game. It takes facts of the local climate and conditions, then determines the weather for the next day or days. I believe weather helps make a fantasy environment more real. While weather in stories and movies usually is only present to set a mood, if you are attempting to immerse your players into the world then weather can help make the experience more real.

It was basically something game related that did not demand heavy graphics. I have my own idea of a game environment, so am having to build my own game engine. Having no experience in graphics, and all related tutorials simply telling you how it is presently done (which I don't want to duplicate), I am having a hard time writing my graphics code.

Wow.. you are talented in that front. I would have to say that is more then I would try to do on my own.

When you are done, you will have to give us links to the game so we can have a look at this. I am already excited about this.

PostSubject: Further Update   August 18th 2009, 3:09 pm

Gee, it felt good to sit down and drink a pot of coffee this morning. It felt better to open up my word processor and have almost a full installment come bubbling out. I am presently doing 12 hour shift work for a local factory.

No, I'm not teaching. Got frustrated with it last year. I don't do politics, and I don't put on a shows for administrators. My students learned, and the points were UP on the tests. Administration did not care however, as I don't play politics and did not put on shows. I thus was not re-hired.

Well, it was more than not re-hired. I was blacklisted. Believe it. When I went back to the school board for some stuff, I found that there was paperwork to keep me from being hired. Proved my point that the education system does not care about education. I did a couple of processing things to put things right, but did not really care about getting another job.

I like industry work. It is honest. You don't have to put up with a multitude of hooligans attempting to work against you. Industry work does have its own internal problems, but I am presently finding it preferable to school. The only problem is the 12-hour shifts. I come home, spend a few minutes with my boys making sure that they are fed and ready for school the next day, then go to bed. I might try teaching again next year, but this year I am going to prove again that I can really work for a living.

I am also attempting to move to the northern part of the state. Have some family property up there, which I am attempting to clean up in preparation to build a place. There is a gorge that my past relatives have tried to fill with trash to prevent erosion. I have my own plans for the gorge, so have been removing the trash. It is a lot of work, but I am making a change. By the way, I am recycling the metals with the money I make from the metals being spent paying to dispose of the tires. If there was a place to recycle the glass, I would do that as well (Bud Light bottles, if you must know -- damn kids, if they were going way back in the woods to drink alcohol, you would think that they would get something decent to drink).

Anyway, back on topic, 12-hour shifts do not put me in a mood to write. I generally do come home in the mood to program, so have been writing some code that I had been putting off. Once these little general use programs are finished, I might get back on the graphic parts of my game code.

Today is the start of some down time, and I thought I would update everyone on what I was about. I am not gone, only adjusting to a different style of life. I will still be around, and will post when I have something to say and time to write it down.

I have noticed the same thing in myself, I tend to want to work on mini-programs or something more exacting then writing after a hard days work, (i work in Recreational Maintenance).
