Monthly Writing Prompt
For this month's writing prompt write a scene using the following sentence to start;

The streets were deserted. Where was everyone? Where had they all gone?

Writing Tip
Our monthly writing tips are written by our very own TerishD. You can read more in Terish's Blog located in "The Abstractions" area of the forum.

Look Back

When not able to write ahead, it helps to look back. In my case I had written a paragraph ahead of the story. What I needed to do was add a section of exposition (talking) presenting some facts. In going back, I realized that I could insert a section where a 'tour' of the surroundings could be done. This allowed for character interaction, story development, and other things that enabled me to present the facts in an entertaining manner.

One should not face a writer's block with the mentality of bursting through it. I have found in my own experience that a writer's block is usually due to my mind indicating that it has a problem in 'channeling' the story. One reason might be a re-imagining of certain story points. Another reason however is that there is a problem in where you are at in the story, so you need to look back and find out the problem with the 'journey' that prevents the tale from advancing.

Is anyone doing Nano this year? I need some writing buddies for encouragement!!

Are there any pros or cons for doing Nano, in your opinion?

Yes I'm doing Nano, but you already got me as a buddy =]

Like I mentioned before, I don't really write a lot of stories, but I really want to give it a try and I am actually pretty excited about it. I know it's going to be hard for me but I'm optimistic!

I believe too much in editing to do Nano. I write quite a bit, but I want a degree of quality. Hopefully the process ignites a spark within you. I wish you both well.

I'm doing Nano.

I'll buddy you as soon as I make an account.

The Pro is the desire to create, just put the pen to paper and write. be damned if it good, bad, suckage to the furthest extent of the existence of writing with a plot line so bland that you could put a professional soccer announcer to sleep, it is a feeling of accomplishment.

But like anything, it is a challenge, Some people need that deadline, they need that "lets do this" to get anything done, while others have that competitive drive to just win something.

I lost badly last year, and I plan to try again.

I have a whole new story in mind, and I'll give it my best. If I make money on it, I'm glad to help the cause, if I don't. Then life goes on.

Yes I agree with you, Urs. NaNo is an accomplishment and even though you write your story without editing, you always have the chance to do so afterwards. You never know what might happen afterwards. Everything's possible as long as you believe in it.

You can buddy me too, Urs. My name there is 'Snacker'. Oh look there, what a surprise =]

Yes I have. Even though I knew how to start the story off, I still had quite some problems putting it down. After a while it flew pretty good though. Got 2100 words down so far.

How about you?

Yes, I'm still at it. First count was 1639 and I don't want to stop. I've had a few sleepless nights, and this one is no different other than I was more productive. How are you doing Urs?

I completed the 50k last year - it was a great feeling! I still haven't "finished" or done much editing on that story, and it wasn't easy. However, I did it. Highly recommended to try, at least once. This year I'm not so sure... Now that I am writing full-time, it seems like an extra hassle lol.

Especially if you are paid a salary. Sometimes it pays being a simple wage earner. Still, Urs, be happy that you have a job.

It's just a contract job, It ends December.

I'm a wage slave, so yah 15 hours OT for the work, but my body is killing me from this, very labor intense work, mainly my legs, but pretty much everything hurts now.

I did it. I just submitted my 50k+ words to NaNo and got my winner certificate and goodies. I did not think I could do it in the beginning, but I proved myself wrong! I'm glad I gave it a chance and it feels good to succeed!
